When we think of resurfacing, we usually think of chemical peel, dermabrasion or laser. These procedures remove the outer layers of skin to help improve sun and smoke damaged skin, as well as fine wrinkles due to aging. These are all aggressive resurfacing procedures. For greater comfort, we prefer to do chemical peels and dermabrasion with sedation in our certified surgi-center. We no longer use laser resurfacing because we find that the end results are similar to a chemical peels. We prefer chemical peels because there is less post-operative pain and fewer pigmentary disorders after the procedure. The recovery period is approximately 8 to 12 days.

We recommend an aggressive conditioning skincare program to achieve the best results with the least amount of down time. A good conditioning program using the Obagi NuDerm system with stronger concentrations of tretinoin will prepare the skin for a chemical peel or dermabrasion, encourage rapid healing, and post-procedure rapid return of normal color.

For patients who do not want the down time of a chemical peel, or for those with milder problems, the Obagi NuDerm System may suffice. This will be discussed during your consultation.

Glycolic acid, when combined with hydroquinones and tretinoin (Retin-A) are the active ingredients that can accomplish considerable improvement in a non-surgical setting. At times, we add microdermabrasion to speed up the process and allow for more rapid penetration of the drugs. This too is considered non-surgical in that it can be done as an office procedure with no down time.
