The key ingredient in Radiesse is 30% calcium hydroxylapatite in a 70% gel consisting of cellulose, glycerin and sterile water. The calcium microspheres remain in place to act as a scaffold that allows the in-growth of fibroblasts that lay down collagen. In this way Radiesse stimulates the body to produce new collagen. This maintains the injected volume for a longer period of time.
Radiesse has been tested extensively in clinical trials for over 7 years with good safety and efficacy results. Radiesse has proven to be a very versatile facial contouring product and has demonstrated durable augmentation in areas such as the nasolabial folds, chin and cheek where a larger volume is required to bulk the surrounding tissue. Radiesse can also be used to accentuate facial features that require more definition or soften features where less definition is desired.
Radiesse is approved for a number of medical conditions including facial bone augmentation, and has been used off-label in America since 2003 for wrinkle treatment. Radiesse was FDA approved on 12/27/06 for the long lasting correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as the nasolabial folds. Radiesse also has clearance status in Europe, Canada and Latin America for facial esthetics. There is both a large European and American experience with this product.
Radiesse is a cosmetic dermal filler for moderate facial wrinkles and nasolabial folds made from a completely synthetic compound comprised of microspheres of calcium hydroxylapatite combined with an aqueous gel. Calcium is a natural substance already in the body, so Radiesse causes no allergic reactions or inflammation. It is slowly biodegradable and no pre-testing is required.
When injected, the cream-like texture of Radiesse feels soft and natural and builds up the tissue of the face, reducing folds and creases and restores fullness. Radiesse will remain soft and pliable and will take on the characteristics of the surrounding tissue. This product provides a matrix into which the body’s own tissue can grow and maintain the implant in place and then slowly dissolves away over one or more years.
Enhancement with Radiesse is relatively painless, and any swelling or redness from the injections typically disappears within 2-5 days. You can comfortably return to normal activities after your treatment. You will see results immediately. Unlike products that loose their effectiveness within only a few months (such as collagen), Radiesse provides years (one to two years) of rejuvenation with intermittent touch ups. Individual results may vary, affected by age, skin type, lifestyle, and muscle activity.
Radiesse can smooth and enhance key areas of the face:
- Reducing lines between the nose and mouth (nasolabial folds)
- Filling in the so-called “smile lines” and “frown lines”
- Diminishing blemishes like acne scars
- Renewing fullness in the lips, and improving lip lines
- Restoring the natural contours of the cheeks
Please note: Although Radiesse is the more costly of the facial fillers, it is comparably priced because of the longer duration of results. An additional benefit of Radiesse is that it requires less frequent injections compared to a product like collagen which lasts only 3 months.
