JUVEDERM™ Injectable Gel

Home : Injectables & Facial Fillers : JUVEDERM™ Injectable Gel

by Peter T. Pacik, MD, FACS

JUVEDERM™ Injectable Gel is a hyaluronic acid filler made by Allergan for the correction of facial wrinkles and volume deficiency of the face. JUVEDERM™ Injectable Gel received FDA clearance June 5, 2006.

The company makes two types of JUVEDERM™ Injectable Gel: JUVEDERM™ Ultra Injectable Gel is used for fine lines and wrinkles and for lip enhancement. JUVEDERM™ Ultra Plus Injectable Gel is a thicker substance useful for volume deficiency such as depressions, correction of nasolabial folds and mid-face collapse.

JUVEDERM™ Injectable Gel is of non-animal origin and is highly biocompatible. It does not require prior testing. JUVEDERM™ Injectable Gel offers the highest concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid available in a dermal filler which results in a longer duration of results. In addition, JUVEDERM™ Injectable Gel contains 24 mg hyaluronic acid per ml whereas Restylane contains 20 mg/ml. Originally, Allergan promoted JUVEDERM™ Injectable Gel as lasting 6 to 9 months whereas Restylane typically lasts 4 to 6 months. Recent clinical studies (June 2007) show that JUVEDERM™ Ultra Injectable Gel and JUVEDERM™ Ultra Plus Injectable Gel may last for up to a year.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural complex sugar found in all living organisms and creates volume and elasticity in the skin.

In a clinical study frequently quoted in the medical literature, JUVEDERM™ Injectable Gel was compared to Zyplast in a randomized controlled clinical study of 439 subjects. JUVEDERM™ Injectable Gel dermal filler was found to last longer than Zyplast over the 6 month course and 88% of the subjects favored Juvederm. JUVEDERM™ Injectable Gel has not yet been compared to Restylane in a clincial study.
