Microdermabrasion for Exfoliation
Microdermabrasion is a deeper form of exfoliation than what can be achieved with products alone. No anesthesia is necessary and patients can return to their activities after the procedure. Aluminum oxide crystals are sprayed across the surface in a closed loop system with immediate suctioning into a disposable container resulting in a deeper exfoliation. The crystals are not re-used. Two types of machines are available, esthetician and MD models. The MD models, which are used in our office, are more powerful and need to be used under a physician's supervision. This model gives us wide flexibility for depth of treatment.
Microdermabrasion systems enhance the skin condition by improving enlarged or oily pores and granularity of the skin. Microdermabrasion improves fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, lips and neck. Mild acne scarring can be improved, though deeper scars require a more vigorous dermabrasion done in the operating room. The combination of skin exfoliation and suction stimulates production of new, living cells at the base level of the skin. This causes more rapid cell turnover and improved blood flow. The result is a healthier, smoother, more radiant skin with enhanced elasticity and skin texture. Microdermabrasion will help with better absorption of skincare products.
The Purpose of Microdermabrasion
- Superficial skin exfoliation to improve fine lines and wrinkles
- Reduces pore size
- Gently removes thickened skin areas caused by sun exposure and other environmental factors
- Reduces blemishes
Microdermabrasion will assist, but not completely fix, severe sun damage (use resurfacing), moderate to severe acne scarring (use dermabrasion, laser), significant pigmentary problems (use bleaching creams, chemical peels), and deep wrinkles (use resurfacing). Microdermabrasion has little or no effect on skin cancers, keloids, and skin growths.
Generally 6 to as many as 12 treatments (30 to 45 minutes each) are necessary for optimal results. Treatments are spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart. As with any exfoliation or resurfacing, it is important to use sunscreens, because the skin is more susceptible to injury by the sun.
The best candidates for Microdermabrasion are men and women who have good skin tone, have realistic expectations and are in good health.
