The Obagi Nu Derm system represents the gold standard of skin care in our practice. I know of no other system that is as consistently effective for the correction of sun damage noted by freckles, dark spots and aging skin. When combined with the medium depth Obagi Blue Peel the results are dramatic for rejuvenation. Many patients think that rejuvenation involves an expensive face lift when actually brightening up the skin does wonders for facial rejuvenation. The entire process includes 8-12 weeks of conditioning with the Obagi Nu-Derm System followed, in select patients, by the Obagi Blue Peel. We allow the skin to become conditioned by using lesser strengths of tretinoin (Retin-A) and start with the 0.025%. We then advance to the 0.05% tretinoin and if tolerated the 0.1% tretinoin. This allows the peeled skin to heal more quickly because of the more rapid turnover of the skin cells as a result of using the tretinoin. We get our best results when patients use an aggressive pre-procedure conditioning program advancing to tretinoin 0.1%.
 The Obagi Nu-Derm System
The Obagi Nu-Derm Advanced Skin Care System is designed to restore health to sun and smoke damaged skin, as well as even out pigmentary problems involving the face and other areas of the body in skin of any color. The Nu-Derm system corrects surface discoloration and blemishes. It also penetrates into the skin to stimulate skin cell renewal, improve circulation and help rebuild collagen. The normal barrier function of the skin is restored, making the skin less sensitive and better able to hydrate properly. After six weeks (one skin cycle), new skin cells emerge to the surface. Skin of any color responds well to this system. The ingredients have a long history of safety and effectiveness.

Obagi Nu-Derm Advanced Skincare Products
 The Obagi Nu-Derm System consists of a group of complementary products containing active ingredients such as alpha hydroxy acids, hydroquinones and tretinoin. Alpha hydroxy acids (exfoliants) are incorporated into the Nu-Derm System (Exfoderm contains the gentler Phytic Acid for sensitive skin; Exfoderm Forte contains Glycolic Acid) to promote exfoliation (removal of the outer layer of dead cells) and better penetration of the products. This results in improved hydration of the skin, and more rapid turnover of cells resulting in rejuvenation of the skin. The hydroquinones (lightening creams) correct sun damage, brown spots, uneven pigmentation and will even color tone. The tretinoin (anti-oxidant Vitamin A cream -- brand name Retin-A cream) of the Obagi Nu-Derm System improves the deeper collagen and elastin layers, by stimulating increased blood supply to the important collagen and elastic fibers of the deeper portions of the skin. It is this increased blood supply that gives the skin a pink radiant glow in contrast to the dull, yellow brown sun damaged skin that most people have after years in the sun. In addition the health and thickness of these structures is restored. This results in smoother, firmer skin.
The Obagi Blue Peel
 The Obagi Blue Peel is an in-office procedure designed to improve the appearance and health of your skin. Using a low concentration of the chemical trichloroacetic acid (TCA) mixed with a special blue base, to monitor the appropriate depth, the peel effectively removes the surface layers of aged and damaged skin from the face or other parts of the body. These dead skin cells are replaced by healthier ones, allowing the skin's own clarity and tightness to resurface. One or more coats of the Obagi Blue Peel will be applied.
The Obagi Blue Peel can be performed on the face, neck, and any other part of the body to improve pigmentary problems. The benefits and process will be discussed with you during your consultation.
The Obagi Blue Peel does not thin the skin and can be repeated in 3-4 months if needed for more severe skin care problems. It may be combined with dermabrasion for more severe acne scarring.
The Obagi Blue Peel is a medical procedure and is performed by Dr. Pacik or Dr. Sterling. The safety of the Nu-Derm Skin Care System has not been established for pregnancy or nursing mothers; therefore, should be avoided at these times.

Procedure: Preconditioning of the skin with the Obagi Nu-Derm System followed by an application of TCA (Tricloroacetic Acid) mixed with a special blue base.
Indications: Sun, smoke damaged skin with pigmentary problems; wrinkles and laxity
Treatment sessions: In most cases, the procedure takes 30-60 minutes.
Anesthesia: We prefer to sedate our patients to make the Blue Peel procedure more comfortable. All peels are done in our certified surgi-center.
Side Effects: Minimal post-peel pain. With proper pre-procedure conditioning, healing in about 1 week and continued improvement for 4 to 6 weeks becoming firmer, clearer, smoother, healthier and more youthful looking.
Risk: Please read your permit carefully and ask us to explain anything you do not understand.
Post-Peel Recovery: Some swelling may occur. Swelling varies according to the depth of the peel and the degree of skin laxity. Skin will feel tight and darken before it starts to peel. Skin will begin to peel in 2 to 3 days. Complete healing should occur on an average of 7 to 10 days. Occasional itching and a mild degree of oozing may occur. Redness for 1 month, then pink. Our aesthetician will work with you to restore your appearance as rapidly as possible. Make-up can be applied after healing.
Results: Healthier, tighter, glowing skin with more even pigmentation. Treatments can be repeated every 3-4 months. The Obagi Nu-Derm System of products is continued after the Blue Peel for 6 weeks and then the Obagi Nu-Derm Maintenance System is started.
